A pea is a, most commonly green, occasionally golden yellow, or sometimes even purple, pod-shaped vegetable, widely grown as a cool season vegetable crop. It is the small spherical seed or the seed-pod of the pod fruit Pisum sativum. Each pod contains several peas.
In modern times peas are usually boiled or steamed, which breaks down the cell walls and makes the taste sweeter and the nutrients more bioavailable but some people even like to eat them raw. They taste excellent cooked with butter and salt! Many shops sell dried peas which are an excellent introduction if you are feeling shy as they are crunchy and often heavily spiced. You also might have seen split pea soup on a restaurant menu. Don't let the green color fool you, sometimes its filled with tasty additions like ham and it is really quite good.
Canned peas are probably the least tasty way to eat peas as they can become soggy so definitely definitely give peas another try if you have never has fresh peas. Maybe add them to your meal next Tuesday or give the recipe Pack a Punch Paella a try!
